A few weeks ago was Dobby’s 1 year adoption day! This first year with him has been such a whirlwind! When we first brought him home from the sanctuary, he was anxious, fearful, and seemingly unable to relax. He was a handful. I remember crying after the first few days because I was so overwhelmed and wasn’t sure how we would be able to travel ever again, have friends over, or even use the restroom alone. His anxiety was almost crippling for us both. However, those first few days with him were also amazing as he began to show his playful and loving personality.
The Changes that Can Happen in a Year
This past year has shown me what patience, love, and dedication can do. Dobby has transformed from an anxious little boy who would whine and claw at the bathroom door when it was closed for a second into a calm dog who is able to be home alone during the work day. He was once a scared pup who hated Neal and would growl at him the minute he got home and is now this loving dog who goes into the most excited full body wiggle when Neal comes home and attacks him with kisses. He’s even started being okay with strangers being in the house, loves his dog walker (we do too), and even loves his crate and will run into it with a treat if given one. I love seeing where he is today and remembering where he came from. We had to learn how to communicate with him (lol, with food) and tell him what we wanted him to do. With a little direction, he was able to flourish. It’s also important to mention that starting him on Prozac has been a game changer for his anxiety. I was super hesitant to medicate him and we tried everything from different calming chews, Bach’s Rescue Remedy, and training the calm protocol. All are important and beneficial, but Prozac has helped him the most and led to an incredible transformation where he is able to relax more, not on edge all the time, and enjoy walks.
The Joy of Dobby
I wouldn’t repeat this past year because there were times when Dobby was really difficult–a lot of joy, but a lot of difficulty. I never knew I could love anything so furry so much. Cuddling him is my new favorite past time. I am so excited to see him grow in the years to come and can’t imagine our life without him. Below are my favorite photos of Dobby from this year. It was hard to narrow them down since he is the cutest thing in the world! Probably over half of these photos come from Dobby’s Rover walker and our friend, Hannah. She is amazing with him and it’s been so relieving to have someone we can trust Dobby with! She walks him twice a week and stays with him when we go out of town. We love you, Dobby!!
