This Past January…
2019! That feels so strange to write. I just got use to writing out 2018 and now I need to forget what I’ve done for the past year get use to this new reality that we are in 2019.
January was pretty tame for us. Neal is in full busy season mode; working later than usual and most weekends. Inspired by Marie Kondo’s book, I’ve been “tidying” our house and seeing which items spark joy. So far, we’ve gone through clothes, magazines, bathroom and makeup, electronics and random cords, crafts, linens, and our small collection of workout stuff. All I have left to tidy is the kitchen, cleaning supplies, and Christmas decorations. Our house already feels lighter and much less cluttered. I love being able to open our dresser drawers and seeing exactly what I want to wear and easily finding what I want in our bathroom. I can’t wait to finish the rest of the house.
I got my hair cut at the beginning of this month and feel like a new woman! I forgot how much I love having short hair. I always would clip my hair back or tie it in a pony tail to keep it off my neck and out of my face, so having short hair makes me feel much more put together and I’m spending less time on it in the morning.

- Sweet Potato and Kale Tacos with Garlicky Cilantro Mojo Sauce – These tacos are so good! Skillet sweet potatoes are seasoned with spices, cooked with kale, and drizzled with my favorite Garlicky Cilantro Mojo Sauce. These tacos are easily vegan by omitting the goat cheese or using a vegan alternate.
- Garlicky Cilantro Mojo Sauce – This addicting sauce is one of my favorites to make to drizzle on tacos, roasted vegetables, and grilled meats.

What I Read in December
- The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success: A Practical Guide to the Fulfillment of Your Dreams by Deepak Chopra – The first book I read in the new year!
- China Rich Girlfriend by Kevin Kwan – This is the 2nd book in the Crazy Rich Asians trilogy by Kevin Kwan. Like it’s predecessor, Crazy Rich Asians, this book is hilarious and hard to put down!
- The Mind-Gut Connection: How the Hidden Conversation Within Our Bodies Impacts Our Mood, Our Choices, and Our Overall Health by Emeran Mayer – Interesting read about how the relationship between our gut and our mind. It’s made me think more critically about what I’m putting into my body and the relationship between my emotions and overall health.
- Ultrametabolism: The Simple Plan for Automatic Weight Loss by Mark Hyman – Easy to read book about how to super charge your metabolism. Hyman focuses on eating whole and nutritious foods which aligns with my food philosophy.
- A God in Ruins by Kate Atkinson – I’m currently listening to this audio book. I don’t have much to say about this book yet.
- Lethal White by Robert Galbraith – The fourth book in the Cormoran Strike series! I love this series and the fourth book is truly addicting! There is some romance, mystery and murder so it has a little bit of something for everyone.

Phillips Hue Lights – Neal and I are not morning people at all. We will press snooze 20 times before we finally get out of bed, feeling rushed and running late to work. It’s not a good way to start the day. For one of our New Years resolutions, we’re trying to become morning people. We got the Phillips Hue Lights Starter Kit and two Bloom lamps for our bedside tables to help simulate a sunrise in the morning. It’s helped so much! I’m still not getting up early every morning, but am getting up early about 3 – 4 mornings a week. Gently waking up to a sunrise is so much better than being jarred awake by a blaring alarm.
Roasted Dandelion Root and Chicory Tea – I gave up caffeine about a year ago after reading caffeine could disrupt women’s hormones. Since giving up caffeine, I fall asleep way easier and have less cramps. I’ve learned to enjoy herbal tea, but recently have been missing the bitter taste and silky texture of coffee. Steeping 1 teabag of this Roasted Dandelion Root tea with 1/2 to 1 teaspoon Chicory root has tamed my cravings and I look forward to my morning cup of tea.
Game of Thrones – Okay so Neal and I are a little late on watching this, but we started watching the show about 2 weeks ago and are obsessed. We’re already on season 3. Each episode is has so many twists! The violence is a lot though, it’s a little hard to handle at times.

Dobby’s January Update
This January was a big month for Dobby as we had his adoptiversary! 1 year ago, when we were brand new to Northwest Arkansas, we drove up to Exeter, MO and picked up Dobby from the Haven of the Ozarks animal shelter. He has changed our life for the better and I love seeing him bound out of his crate in the morning, the endless snuggles, and how perfectly he fits into our little family. Transitioning him to our house was certainly not easy, but so worth the struggles. He is one happy dog and I am so glad he has found happiness with us.It was also a big month for Dobby because we started him on puppy Prozac. After a year of dealing with anxiety, behavioral modification training, and trying to help him calm down, we talked to the vet and she said he would be a good candidate for Prozac. It’s helped his anxiety and it feels like he is able to finally relax more. His stomach isn’t doing too well though with the medication. He’s throwing up a little bit and skipping some meals. We’re going to try switching his dog food and see how that goes.
We had a little sprinkle of snow and Dobby LOVED playing in it! He wanted to play fetch, run and lick it non stop! So funny to see him run while licking the snow!
