Classic Margarita on the Rocks

This classic margarita is a perfectly balanced, crisp, and refreshing drink! Made with tequila, lime juice, cointreau (orange liqueur), and agave syrup. This drink recipe can easily be doubled or scaled up for a big batch of margaritas.

Ingredients

  • 3 parts silver tequila I used Sparkle Donkey silver tequila*
  • 2 parts lime juice
  • 1.5 parts cointreau (orange liqueur) I used Patron Citronge
  • .5 parts agave syrup optional, for sweetening
  • ice
  • lime wedges or slices for garnish
  • flaky salt for the rim Maldon is preferable, but kosher also works!

Instructions

  1. If desired, salt the glass rim by running a lime wedge around the edge of a glass. Fill a shallow bowl with salt and dip the rim of the glass until it is covered. Set aside.
  2. Add ice, tequila, lime juice, cointreau, and agave syrup (if using) to cocktail shaker and shake until combined. Taste, and add more agave if desired. I found .5 parts agave to be the perfect amount!
  3. Fill glass with ice and strain the margarita mixture over the ice. Garnish with lime and serve immediately.

Recipe Notes

*Originally, I made this with Patron silver tequila that was gifted to me for my 22nd birthday (took me FOREVER to finish the bottle!). When I went to buy more tequila, I asked for recommendations from the liquor store owner. He suggested I try Sparkle Donkey for margaritas and said that the most important thing is to get tequila that is labeled 100% agave. If you're not sure wha type of tequila to get, I highly suggest asking! I was super happy with this suggestion and liked the Sparkle Donkey better than the Patron!
